Recap: ALA's 2024 Summer Symposium
We are thrilled to report that the Abraham Lincoln Association’s 2024 Summer Symposium, held on June 22 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, was a resounding success. The event featured engaging presentations and enthusiastic participation from our members, making it a truly memorable occasion.
The symposium highlight was an insightful keynote address by Ed Achorn, based on his book The Lincoln Miracle: Inside the Republican Convention That Changed History. Achorn captivated the audience with his recounting of pivotal moments from Lincoln’s political ascent.
Joshua Claybourn, Vice President of the ALA, kicked off the event with an engaging exploration of Lincoln’s wilderness years in Indiana, highlighting the formative experiences that contributed to Lincoln’s development.
Bill Shepherd, President of the ALA, delivered a presentation titled “Re-electing Lincoln: How the 1864 Election Led to the Abolition of Slavery.”
Dr. Dan Monroe, Associate Professor at Millikin University, presented “Lincoln and Jacksonism,” providing a nuanced exploration of the political influences that shaped Lincoln’s career. His scholarly insights were much appreciated by all attendees.
Robert Girardi, historian and author of eight Civil War books, concluded the symposium with “Major General John E. Smith: Galena’s Forgotten General.” Girardi’s talk linked local and national histories, providing a broader understanding of the era.
The symposium enriched our understanding of Abraham Lincoln through fresh perspectives and groundbreaking research. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the speakers for their contributions and to all attendees for making the event memorable.
